What is flight training like?
Flight training is exciting and challenging. Your first 10 to 20 hours will be focused on learning basic aircraft skills such as turning, climbing/descending, takeoffs and landings, slow flight and stalls. The first stage is complete when you have successfully soloed the airplane without the instructor. In the next stage you will be introduced to cross country flying, short and soft field takeoffs and landings, and flying by reference to instruments. The final stage is preparation for the private pilot oral exam and checkride with a FAA designated pilot examiner.
What is required to obtain a private pilot’s license, and how much does it cost?
The FAA requires at least 40 hours of total flight time before applying for your license. At least 20 of these hours must be dual, and at least 10 hours must be solo (no one else on board the airplane). Realistically, many people require more time than this to become proficient. If all your training is in the 2 seat Cessna 150 ($60/hour), you can expect to spend between $3500 and $5000 for flight instruction and airplane rental.
This sounds expensive, what can I do to minimize my training expenses?
The most important factor is the time you put into training. Flying and studying more frequently will reduce the amount of time it takes you to learn this new skill. I suggest at least 2 flight lessons a week and several hours spent studying.
Are there alternatives to getting my private license that are less expensive?
Yes, you have 3 options. First, you could learn to solo. This will allow you to fly in restricted conditions with no one else with you. You will be under the close supervision of an instructor, but it gives you the freedom to fly locally as you build experience. Second, you could obtain a sport pilot’s license. This cuts in half the FAA minimum time requirements. You are limited to 2 seat airplanes with a max gross weight of less than 1,320 pounds and other restrictions. Many used light sport aircraft can be purchased for under $30,000. Third, you could obtain a recreational license. This allows you to fly aircraft such as the Cessna 150 or Piper Arrow (with passengers), but places restrictions on the distance you can travel and does not allow you to fly larger airplanes. Practically, most people decide that if they are going to learn to fly, they should proceed directly to the private pilot’s license. This gives the most freedom and does not cost much more than the sport or private pilot’s license.
I would like to fly for the airlines, what training will I need? Can you do that?
To begin with, you will need your private pilot’s license and instrument rating. The instrument rating will allow you to fly in the clouds. Then you will need to obtain your commercial pilot’s license (which requires at least 250 hours total time). Next you will need to get a multi-engine rating. Since most regional airlines require anywhere from 500 to 1000 hours of total time, many people pursue the Certified Flight Instructor license in order to build time. I can assist you with obtaining all of this training with the exception of the multi-engine rating.
